Conduct marks
Middle School students receive conduct marks for behavior infractions, like those listed below, based on the severity of the offense (the following list is not exhaustive):
1 mark for:
2 marks for:
5 marks and sent straight to the office for:
1 mark for:
- Talking out of turn
- Disrupting class
- Failure to follow directions
- Eating or Drinking in class (except water or at snack time)
- Late for class without permission
- Uniform violations (see uniform code below)
2 marks for:
- Failure to keep hands and feet to self
- Writing or passing personal notes
- Unauthorized possession of an electronic device (device will be confiscated and sent to office)
- Inappropriate language
- Dishonesty
- Writing on self or clothing
5 marks and sent straight to the office for:
- Disrespect of teachers/staff
- Cheating/plagiarism
- Roughhousing, inappropriate touching
- Malicious and inappropriate language/gestures/materials
- Inappropriate dress
- Destructive action to property
- Presence in an undesignated area
- Use of personal electronic devices without permission
- Inappropriate use of school technology
Tier System rewards and consequences
On Thursday each week students are placed onto conduct tiers based on the number of marks they have received since the previous Thursday:
On Fridays, students on Tier 0 earn privileges which may include: outdoor lunch, different menu for lunch, snow cones, special recess or priority location for recess, etc. Students on Tier 1 have no consequences, but no rewards. At Friday recess the students on Tier 2 and 3 make reparations for their behavior by sitting out or doing some service to the school respectively. Students on Tier 3 also have silent lunch on Friday away from classmates. If a student is on Tier 3 repeatedly, a parent meeting will be scheduled to determine a behavior plan.
In the event we have a holiday on Friday the Tiers will be calculated Wednesday and consequences/rewards will be carried out on Thursday.
- Tier 0 for zero marks,
- Tier 1 for one or two marks,
- Tier 2 for three or four marks, or
- Tier 3 for five or more marks.

tier 3 and sports
Middle School students who participate in SJS sports and earn a Tier '3' for the week in conduct during the season will be ineligible to participate in the next game of their season. The consequence of one game does not affect team practices or game attendance, only participation in the game. If teams have started practices, but have not yet begun games, the student will miss the first game of the season. The 'season' begins when tryouts or practices have begun and is over after the final game.
dance points
Dance points determine the cumulative eligibility for Middle School Dance attendance. Students receive dance points equal to what tier they are on each week (i.e. a student on Tier 2 would get 2 dance points that week). To be eligible to go to a school dance, a middle school student must have dance points less than or equal to the number of weeks since the last dance (or beginning of school for the first dance). If the first dance was on the fourth week of school then students would have to have 4, 3, 2, 1, or 0 dance points to be able to go to that dance. So, a student who was on tiers 1, 0, 2, 1 (1+0+2+1=4) would be able to go or tiers 1, 1, 1, 1 (1+1+1+1=4) or 0+0+2+0=2 would be able to go. On the other hand a student on tiers 3, 1, 1, 0 (3+1+1+0 = 5) would not be allowed to attend the dance. You will be notified Thursday afternoon by email if your child cannot attend the dance (if you do not get the email then your child may attend).
Student's tiers are posted as a grade out of 100 in the Conduct Gradebook on RenWeb. Ignore the fact that they are F's simply look at the percentage. 0% means your child was on tier 0, 1% means your child was on tier 1, and so on.
